Two stocks have dominated the memory chip market: Samsung and SK Hynix . SK Hynix is already the primary supplier of HBM3 chips to Nvidia's AI chipsets. SK Hynix Trent Masters, global portfolio manager at Alphinity Investment Management, says he prefers SK Hynix. Nam Hyung Kim, partner at Arete Research, also prefers SK Hynix, giving it a buy rating and Samsung a neutral rating. "[But I] also anticipate a buying opportunity on SK Hynix once it is adjusted due to intensifying competition in HBM3E," said Kim.

The upbeat outlook from the world’s largest memory chip maker sent its shares 1.8% higher on Tuesday after it reported a more than 10-fold rise in first-quarter operating profit. Operating profit rose to 6.6 trillion won in January to March, up from 640 billion won a year earlier. It was the company’s highest operating profit since the third quarter of 2022. Samsung’s mobile devices business booked a 3.51 trillion won operating profit in the first quarter, down from 3.94 trillion won a year earlier. Rising costs, including increased memory chip prices, dented margins from its flagship Galaxy S24 smartphones launched during the quarter.

Jensen Huang, president of Nvidia, holding the Grace hopper superchip CPU used for generative AI at the Supermicro keynote presentation during Computex 2023. Nvidia on Monday unveiled the H200, a graphics processing unit designed for training and deploying the kinds of artificial intelligence models that are powering the generative AI boom. The new GPU is an upgrade from the H100, the chip OpenAI used to train its most advanced large language model, GPT-4. The H200, which is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2024, will compete with AMD's MI300X GPU. AMD's chip, similar to the H200, has additional memory over its predecessors, which helps fit big models on the hardware to run inference.

REUTERS/Kim Hong-Ji/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSEOUL, Oct 26 (Reuters) - South Korea's SK Hynix (000660.KS) said a boom in artificial intelligence will drive chip profits after posting a sharply narrower third quarter loss than it did in the previous quarter. SK Hynix said it swung to a 1.8 trillion won ($1.33 billion) third-quarter operating loss from a profit of 1.7 trillion won a year earlier. It was its fourth consecutive quarterly loss, but improved from a trough of a 3.4 trillion won loss in the first quarter and a 2.9 trillion won loss in the second quarter. SK Hynix was ahead of rivals in developing HBM3 chips and securing AI-chip leader Nvidia (NVDA.O) as a client.

"No one is coming for Nvidia on AI, period, any time soon," Stifel analyst Ruben Roy told CNBC in an interview Wednesday. The new version of Grace Hopper primarily delivers improvements in memory capacity and bandwidth compared with the first-generation product. In practice, improving the memory capacity and bandwidth of the Grace Hopper Superchip should help AI applications run more efficiently and smoothly. Volume production of the improved Grace Hopper Superchip is expected in the second quarter of 2024, according to Nvidia. Open-source software Nvidia's closed-source CUDA software platform – along with a library of pre-trained AI models — has helped establish the company's AI dominance.

As the use of AI grows, more and more memory is required; indeed, Morgan Stanley called memory the "foundational building blocks" of artificial intelligence. Nvidia and DRAM Nvidia has been at the center of the AI buzz, and it recently reported much better-than-expected results and a huge forecast beat driven by strong AI demand. Samsung Electronics Another top pick for both Morgan Stanley and Citi is Samsung Electronics . Morgan Stanley says Samsung is an indirect beneficiary of tighter supply driven by AI GPU and server demand. "We view our OW call as more defensible on costs, balance sheet strength and the ability to weather a severe downturn better," Morgan Stanley said.

Artificial intelligence is gaining in popularity, but there's a "cheaper" way to play it, according to Morgan Stanley. "Memory is a cheaper way to play the start of AI's explosive new decade-long growth phase," Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a May 29 note. BofA in a separate June 1 report also named SK Hynix as a top pick, saying it will benefit from Nvidia's push into AI. It gave SK Hynix a price target of 160,000 won, or upside of more than 40%. Stocks are "materially cheaper" now than in the previous cycle, Morgan Stanley said.
